The former imperial capital, Kyoto is a very important city in Japan's history. Many of the buildings and palaces in Kyoto are thousands of years old and the city is regarded by many to be the most beautiful in Japan. Kyoto has 17 areas listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, most of which are temples and shrines like Kinkaku Temple.

Kyoto Station is a popular entry point into the city and, as with most of Japan, the rail network provides access to all the city's most important sites. The two most impressive imperial retreats, Imperial Palace and Sentō Imperial Palace, are located in central Kyoto. The gardens are extensive and particularly beautiful during cherry blossom season and in autumn when the colors of the leaves change.

Katsura Imperial Villa is located in Western Kyoto and Shugakuin Imperial Villa is located in the north. Kyoto's nightlife is concentrated around the Kiyamachi area in central Kyoto. There are hundreds of bars ranging from pubs to exclusive bars all throughout the area, as well as restaurants and night clubs. Kyoto is a city rich in history and charm, and visitors to this area will not be in want of exciting and interesting activities.

Having gotten its start in the 1500s when its grand castle was built, Japan's second-largest city is still a place where locals appreciate the value of fine foods and designer goods. While Osaka can't compete with Tokyo in terms of scale, it certainly has a reputation for refined living.

Most of the hotels in Osaka are in Umeda, near the bullet train station. These include major international names set in prominent entertainment districts. These hotels are convenient choices for business travelers as well as tourists.

On the surface, Osaka looks like any other big city, but it hides a mammoth shopping arcade underground. A couple of these are among the largest malls in Japan, and they're completely out of sight. Above-ground boutiques are also located in the Namba and Shinsaibashi districts. Osaka Castle, a Universal Studios theme park, and the enormous Osaka Aquarium are some of the city’s major attractions.

Osaka's international gateway is Kansai International Airport. The main terminal is a mile long and well equipped with dining and shopping facilities as well as a rail link to the city center.

Okinawa is Japan's southernmost territory, markedly different from the rest of the region. The temperate climate, excellent beaches, and insight into the little-known Ryukyu Kingdom make it a favorite among travelers, and a must-see for new visitors to the region. Originally built by the Ryukyu Kingdom, it's one of the few reminders of the region's rich and ancient history. A selection of shops, restaurants, and hotels can be found on International Street, which runs from the city center all the way to the castle. On the Motobu peninsula, travelers will find Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium, a state-of-the-art aquarium featuring one of the largest tanks in the world containing manta rays and whale sharks.

Outdoor adventurers will find Okinawa to be a great destination for snorkeling, whale-watching, and even swimming with manta rays. For even more adventure, take a short trip to the Yaeyama-Shoto Island and trek along the mountainous jungles.

Okinawa features some of the most beautiful beaches in the area, one of them being Zanba Beach. Small islands like Miyako-Jima and the Keramas have also been rated to have the best beaches in Okinawa. Some of the finest accommodation in Okinawa can be found on secluded beachfront properties.

The city is served by Ishigaki Airport and flights from here connect to dozens of cities across Japan and international cities.

The city of Tokyo is perched on the Japanese island of Honshu and is a beautiful clash of tradition and the futuristic. Exploring the wonders of this city is made all the more enjoyable with a hyper-efficient rail network connected the city’s 23 wards. The vast majority of Tokyo hotels are within a few minutes’ walk of a train station or two, meaning visitors to this city have less time to worry about how to get around and more time to enjoy themselves. The JR Yamanote train line boasts the city’s most popular areas.

The business traveler could very well find themselves settling into the Shinjuku area with executive class hotels. The younger crowds make their way to the shopping and nightlife area of Shibuya with its trendy bars and fashionable shopping. In the Harajuku area, visitors will find a more fashionable atmosphere with boutiques aplenty. Meiji Shrine is an excellent cultural attraction in an evergreen forest, and the tech-savvy will find a bit of paradise at Akihabara, an area famous for its incredible selection of electronics. Those traveling to Japan will most likely find themselves in Narita International Airport, the gateway serving international flights that is located about 60km from Tokyo.

The modern and exciting city of Fukuoka is located on the island of Kyushu and is divided in two by the Hakata River, an area where many of the city’s hotels can be found. Fukuoka is considered an excellent introduction to Japan for first-time visitors thanks to its modest size and comprehensive rail network. Many visitors arrive via the bullet train, but Fukuoka Airport is still a popular gateway and is only two train stops from the city center.

The city’s culture can be visited with a trip to such sites as Dazaifu Tenman-gu Shrine and Shofukuji Temple. The island of Nokonoshima is set in the middle of Hakata Bay and is excellent for hiking, swimming, and camping. Tenjin is the largest shopping district in the city, and visitors can find towering retail blocks, large department stores, and boutique areas such as Tenjin Core. Dining opportunities are abundant, and ramen is certainly one of the most popular dishes, especially from the mobile food stalls.

Fukuoka is host to two major festivals each year – Hakata Gion Yamakasa and Hakata Dontaku. The festival of Yamakasa held in June and is defined by teams of men hoisting floats through set courses while wearing traditional loincloths. Dontaku, celebrated in May, sees stages erected for traditional performances and parades. Both these annual holidays have been celebrated for centuries and are an excellent peek into the local culture.

Sapporo was developed by the Japanese under the advisement of dozens of foreign experts, and as a result, Sapporo has a distinct Western atmosphere. With its parks, museums and annual festivals, Sapporo is a high priority for tourists in the northernmost island of Hokkaido.

The annual Sapporo Snow Festival is a particularly busy time in the city. In many ways, the Snow Festival has grown into Sapporo's defining event with sculptors and spectators pouring in from around the world. Hotels in Sapporo’s city center are especially busy in this season, so it's important to book early. Sapporo is also popular with skiers.

The summer months offer opportunities to enjoy the city's botanical gardens and forest parks. Museums are another major attraction, especially theHistorical Village of Hokkaido and the Museum of Modern Art

The major commercial district is south of Sapporo Station. The dining scene includes a range of delicious seafood restaurants and simple noodle shops. The larger hotels near Sapporo boast their own set of international restaurants as well.

Those who don't arrive via train at Sapporo Station will enter the region through New Chitose Airport. Hotels near the airport are convenient for late arrivals, while the Skybus shuttle and a commuter train transfer passengers to the city center during regular hours.

The city of Nagoya offers a big-city atmosphere, but is lightly visited, leaving it a popular destination for those looking to experience Japan, but without the hectic crowds normally found in other cities like Tokyo. With a four hundred-year old history, the city has much to offer.

One of the city’s biggest draws is Nagoya Castle. It was built in 1612 and restored in the 1950s, maintaining its magnificence and splendor. Nagoya TV Tower is an excellent site to visit for great views of the city from the 100-meter high sky balcony. When looking to explore the shopping opportunities, Oasis 21 Shopping Center and Osu Shopping Arcade provides everything from modern retail to mom-and-pop shops. Hotels can usually provide an abundance of information on recommended sites, including local gardens and cultural spots. A large expatriate community is catered to by several cafes and Western-styled restaurants. More authentic dishes would be udon noodels, kishimen, and miso nikomi udon.

Chubu Centrair International Airport serves the city of Nagoya, and hotels are conveniently connected to the city gateway via the Meitetsu Airport Line. Once in the city, six subway lines and taxis provide ample means to get around and explore Nagoya.

Mount Fuji is one of the most famous sites in the world, with countless people making their journey to climb this mountain. The highest mountain in Japan, Mount Fuji is located inside the impressive Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Not surprisingly, Mount Fuji and the area surrounding it are very popular among adventurers, mountain climbers, and hot springs enthusiasts. However, it is not necessary to be an avid mountain climber to visit the resort town surrounding the mountain. There are many hotels around Lake Kawaguchi, which offer relaxing hot spring resorts with stunning views of the mountain, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Mount Fuji is a dormant volcano, and the climate is the perfect breeding ground for the many hot springs that surround this resort area. Many of the hotels around Mount Fuji offer these baths on site, while there are also specific locations that offer this experience.

During the official climbing season, travelling into Mount Fuji is easier as all access points into the area are increased to accommodate the high traffic. Although the city is also accessed by Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport, it’s actually easier and faster for international tourists to arrive at Tokyo and take an express bus to Kawaguchiko or Fujisan stations.

Of course, the biggest attraction in this area is the mountain itself, and many of the visitors to this area arrive with one goal in mind – to climb Mount Fuji. But for those interested in seeing more of this area, the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum is a spectacular display of natural beauty and some of the most stunning handmade silk kimonos in the world.

Located about three hours to the west of Tokyo, Hakone is a beautiful city of mountains, lakes, and relaxing hot springs. The small city doesn’t have its own airport, so the best access for international visitors is to fly into Narita Airport and take a train to Owakudani Train Station

Because of the area’s mountainous landscape, hiking is a popular way of enjoying the elements while also trying to get views of Mount Fuji. After a long hike, perhaps take advantage of what many of the hotels in Hakone feature - the ever-popular Japanese activity of soaking in a therapeutic hot springs bath. The Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is a favorite destination for experiencing these baths, and the place offers exciting options such as a very unique sake bath, as well as many other creative varieties.

On the picturesque Ashinoko Lake can be found the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, a very popular destination for people who visit this area. The active volcanic activity makes it a great draw for hot springs and spas, which is a very popular activity in this region. A visit to a hot springs bath found in this area, while enjoying stunning views of Mount Fuji, is the ideal and typical experience.

There are many museums in Hakone, but the Hakone Open-Air Museum is an art and nature lover’s dream, offering stunning artworks and sculptures in an open-air setting. In a region that is famous for its unique air and stunning natural landscapes, walking around a park-like structure full of art work is a great way to spend a relaxing day.

Located in the north of Thailand, Chiang Mai is the country’s second largest and second oldest city. As such, it provides an excellent base from which to discover the culture of Thailand. Hundreds of temples are scattered throughout, and anywhere visitors go, they are sure to see pagodas peeking up over the tree line. Visible from all over the city, Doi Suthep Mountain features the most dignified temple of the area on the fringe of the city center.

Shopping is certainly an option here, especially for those looking for handicrafts, delicate carvings, silk, and original artwork. Other than the typical tourist finds of shopping and popular sites, guests can also really immerse themselves in the city by enrolling in cooking, language, yoga, or massage classes. Guided meditation retreats to mountain monasteries, trips to conservation projects such as the Elephant Nature Park, and homestays in remote hill-tribe villages are also very popular for visitors of Chiang Mai.

In the evenings, international restaurants and nightclubs can be found throughout the town. Riverside clubs, the hostess bars of Loy Kroh, and the ultra-chic lounges on Nimmanhemin Road all provide fantastic opportunities to celebrate the memorable experiences gained while in Chiang Mai.

Bangkok is the capital of Thailand, and serves as a gateway for this region. Bangkok is served by Suvarnabhumi International Airport , which is one of the busiest and most important travel hubs in Asia, as well as the regional Don Muang Airport, which serves many of the regional airlines. Hotels in Bang Na are popular with travelers making quick stopovers as the area is within close proximity of the international airport.

Bangkok is a diverse and sprawling city without a dedicated central district. Instead, the major activity follows the major roads of Sukhumvit and Silom through the length of the metropolis. Visitors to this city will have endless options for accommodations, shopping, and some of the most exciting nightlife in Southeast Asia.

Getting around Bangkok used to be tricky, but modern infrastructure changes and the use of sky trains continues to make transportation easier.

The cosmopolitan energy in Bangkok is exhilarating, but it's easy to see that this city also plays an integral role in Thai culture and history. No sooner do tourists round the corner of a brand-new skyscraper than they come face-to-face with a centuries-old temple or an eclectic open-air market. The city features many unforgettable sites such as the Temple of Dawn, the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, which is known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Bangkok remains endlessly fascinating and surprising even to its residents. There’s much more to see and learn about Bangkok, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to continue uncovering all the important landmarks, hotels, and attractions of this vibrant city.

Pattaya has been a favorite relaxation destination for tourists and locals for over 40 years. The city is centrally located close to the capital city, so it usually sees a large influx of partygoers during long weekends.

Although Pattaya is mostly associated with lazy days on the beach followed by nightclubs, the city has accommodations for a more diverse group of visitors. Hotels in Pattaya cater to everyone from retired westerners, business travelers, young honeymooners, and families. It's an unlikely mix, and only Pattaya could make it seem so effortless.

Families often head to the quieter Jomtien Beach, a crescent slice of sand brimming with water sports and beach facilities. It’s just far enough away from the central party scene, and the hotels in this area quiet down earlier in the evening. Many family-friendly activities are based in North Pattaya, featuring Buddhist temples, elephant and nature parks, and weekend markets.

The famous nightlife epicenter of Pattaya is Walking Street, a neon-heavy after-hours pedestrian strip that follows the waterfront.

While Pattaya is widely known as Thailand's party destination, it's becoming an increasingly diverse place to vacation, with the city emphasizing the other quiet beaches and golf courses as alternatives to the bright lights.

Being one of Thailand's most famous islands, Phuket is positioned off the southern coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea, featuring the golden sands, calm blue waters, and coconut palms associated with the perfect tropical vacation. Phuket Town is the island's main commercial area, and accommodation in the city center is cheap.

Phuket's most popular resort area is Patong. Fully redeveloped after the 2004 tsunami, Patong's main roads are lined with restaurants, shops, and countless bars and clubs. The nightlife here is legendary in Asia, and many book a hotel in Patong just to experience its lively after-hours scene.

South of Patong Beach is Karon Beach – a much quieter town with shops, restaurants, and bars that cater specifically to tourists. Kamala also offers a good range of accommodation and infrastructure with resorts becoming progressively more upscale towards Bang Thao, Surin, and Pansea beaches.

On the other side of the Phuket lay the islands of Koh Yao Yai, Koh Yao Noi, and Nakha Yai. Resorts on these islands assure secluded beaches and high levels of service.

Phuket is served by Phuket International Airport, about a 45-minute drive from Patong Beach and Phuket Town.

Hua Hin is one of Thailand’s most sought-after vacation destinations. The opening of Hua Hin Airport gives travelers the option of flying in, although Hua Hin is only a three-hour drive from Bangkok.

The main beach area is Hua Hin Beach, which features high-rise hotels and trendy resorts with bungalows and chalets on either side. Life on this beach couldn't be more relaxing. A bus from the waterfront links to a mountaintop temple with commanding views of the resorts in Cha am and Hua Hin as well as the surrounding countryside.

Hua Hin is becoming increasingly cosmopolitan and boasts first-rate restaurants and nightclubs. Tourists can follow lazy days on the beach with exciting nights on the dance floor.

As the resorts in Hua Hin continue to garner more international attention, savvy travelers have been moving on to quieter areas down the coast. Among these areas is the boutique resort district of Pranburi, a rising star among domestic tourists. For a complete escape from the city, travelers can head to Sam Roi Yot National Park, where the scenery shifts between tangled mangrove forests, gorgeous beaches, and dense forests.

Located in the south of Thailand, Krabi is famed for its limestone formations, calm crystal seas, and beautiful beaches. Krabi Town is one of the most visited towns in the province, since it serves as a departure point for ferries to the islands in Phangna Bay such as Phi Phi and Koh Lanta. There are several notable beaches on the mainland close to Krabi Town including Ao Nang, Railay Beach and Had Yao

Krabi International Airport serves travelers from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Darwin, and Singapore and is just 15 kilometers from Krabi Town.

The main activities in Krabi Town and its outlying villages center on relaxing on the beach, making it a perfect destination for vacationers. Ao Nang is one of the more popular tourist areas in the region, and the main road through town is lined with hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops.

Klong Muang and Tub Kaek beaches are bit further north of Ao Nang and tend to cater to a more up-market crowd. The resorts on Klong Muang and Tub Kaek beaches offer a relaxed atmosphere and truly breathtaking views as well as top-notch services and facilities.

Home to the famous Bridge Over the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi is an increasingly popular destination due to its amazing natural beauty, historical importance, and relaxed small-town atmosphere. Accommodation in Kanchanaburi ranges from inexpensive jungle bungalows to boutique spa resorts that abut the River Kwai.

Aside from the Bridge over the River Kwai and Hellfire Pass, Kanchanaburi is also home to some of the prettiest countryside in Thailand. Erawan Falls, nestled in the rainforests of Erawan National Park, are considered by many to be the most spectacular in the northern part of the country.

The famous Tiger Temple is also located in Kanchanaburi. The temple takes care of rescued tigers, and for a small donation, guests can pet the residents and be photographed with them. The Tiger Temple is a short drive outside of the township, and travelers can easily book a transfer from any hotel in Kanchanaburi.

While the nightlife tends to be very tame in Kanchanaburi, there are plenty of beer bars and pubs geared towards travelers wanting to trade travel tales. The city center also has an abundance of food stalls and markets that light up pockets of the town after dark.

Khao Yai was Thailand’s first established national park and is the country’s second largest. Set in Thailand’s north, the natural beauty and serenity of the area draws in both domestic and foreign visitors every year. Khao Yai is best reached by bus or train, a journey of about three hours from Bangkok.

The park’s bat and gibbon population are some of the main draws to the area. A cave on the edge of the park is home to some one million bats, and their nightly migration makes for quite a site. Treks and night safaris are likely to reveal an abundance of other wildlife, including elephants, tigers, and bears. This UNESCO World Heritage site is also home to over 320 species of birds and 3,000 species of plants.

When not becoming one with nature, visitors gravitate towards the golf course and wineries. The park’s waterfalls are definitely top attractions, even making an appearance in movies, most noticeably The Beach. Hiking, day and night safari tours, and camping can be enjoyed and easily arranged at most hotels. Accommodation in Khao Yai ranges from jungle bungalows to fully-fledged luxury resorts. The wet season is the greatest time to visit, as the cooler season could see the waterfalls slow to a drip.
