Bali is a world away from the rest of Indonesia, and a longtime favorite with international travelers. Surfers have been coming here since the 1930s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that surfing vacations to Bali became the popular thing to do. Today, the trend continues and Bali sees as many surfers as it does affluent resort tourists.

Indonesia may have the world's largest Muslim population, but Bali fosters its own distinct culture. Hinduism has flourished here for nearly 2,000 years. Away from the beaches are fascinating Hindu temples, cultural exhibitions, terraced rice fields, and colorful festivals.

Kuta is the busiest resort district in Bali, featuring some of the top luxury hotels in Bali. Behind the main waterfront is a spread of budget guesthouses that are still within easy walking distance of the beach. From here it's a short trip by taxi or rented motorbike to Uluwatu, a massive limestone peninsula jutting out in the sea. Tourists visit Uluwatu to see the temple, go surfing, or watch the sunset over the majestic cliffs.

Legian is another must-see, as it offers an excellent surf along with exciting nightlife along the beach. Life in Legian begins and ends on the beach. Surf shops give lessons by day, and then give way to lively bars and live music venues after sunset. There is a reason that Bali is often referred to as paradise, and much of it is evidenced by a visit to the many beaches.

One of the most densely populated cities in the world, Jakarta is the capital of Java and the gateway to Indonesia. It's the largest city in Southeast Asia and offers some of the best hotel facilities in the world, which is convenient for all the global commerce that moves through the region.

Jakarta Airport, which is locally known as Soekarno Hatta International Airport, handles more than 30 million travelers a year and is linked to hotels in Central Jakarta via shuttle bus and taxi. The airport is only 20 kilometers from the city center, so travelers who want to stay near the airport have the option of booking a hotel near Jakarta airport.

Central Jakarta is the busiest and most compact of this city and where much of Jakarta's business and finance are conducted. Hotels in Central Jakarta are convenient to major company headquarters, high-end shopping, restaurants, bars, and culturally significant landmarks like the National Monument, locally known as MONAS.

Museums of note within Jakarta include the National Museum and the unique Puppet Museum.

After dark, the nightlife in Jakarta is most active in Central and South Jakarta, with a range of nightclubs, live music venues, and 24-hour cafés. This diverse and exciting city truly has something for everyone.

Husein Sastranegara International Airport, located only three miles away from the city center.

Bandung is especially enjoyed by weekend travelers from Jakarta who flock to the distribution centers dealing in local high fashion and factory outlets that can generally be found in the Setiabudhi Area. As the evening hits, the multitude of bars and clubs light up and draw crowds of dancers and party-goers. Cultural experiences can be enjoyed in the several museums established here such as Museum Geologi, and sites such as Gedung Sate displays strong hints of the city’s colonial past.

Bandung offers plenty of out-of-the-city opportunities as well. The region's high elevation translates into comfortable temperatures, perfect for visiting tea plantations, hiking up dormant volcanoes, or stopping by hot springs. Taxis and car rentals are the best way to reach these areas of the countryside

The city of Yogyakarta boasts the cultures and arts of Indonesian Java. The best hotels for a stay here are located in the historic core, giving visitors access to traditional dances, Javanese poetry, and the country’s highest art forms.

Yogyakarta has all of the attractions and trappings of a major tourist city, all while maintaining its fascinating culture. Traditional Javanese life is almost a step away. The city briefly served as the archipelago’s capital and is host the Yogyakarta Palace, the residence of the sultan. Walking tours through this area and its colonial-era houses is certainly a must.

For the shopping experience, the Main Market is where locals go for clothing, spices, and produce, so good bargains can be found here. The city also is known as the best place for high-quality handicrafts. Dining is an experience with authentic tastes being provided from street stalls in the city center.

Visitors to the city will enter via Adisucipto International Airport, immediately outside the city center and close to accommodation. Flights mainly connect to cities on Java and elsewhere in the archipelago.

Batam Island may be a tiny piece of land, but it packs a big punch in terms of being a getaway destination. The area is quite common with Singaporeans due to its 25-kilometer distance from the country and connection across the water via ferry terminals. Full-service resorts taking advantage of the waterfront are the most common form of accommodation.

Beaches and water sports are the biggest draw to the Batam Islands. Barelang Island is connected to Batam via a network of bridges, and some of the best beaches can be found here. The island of Galang carries history with memorials and photographs commemorating the Vietnamese refugee camp that was located here after the Vietnam War. It is a popular spot for visitors looking to pay respect and cycle around the area. The tourist development of Waterfront City is also a quiet destination worth a quick stop.

Dining on Batam Island is centered on fresh seafood, the evening waterfront markets in particular making a memorable meal. All of the resorts offer a great variety of dining options, and the nicer establishments have extensive wine menus. Batam Island is a duty free zone, making imported beers and wine very affordable. .

Located in the Western Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, Lombok has perhaps the most remote and unspoiled beaches in the Indonesian archipelago. Lush forests and immense mountains provide a majestic backdrop to white sandy beaches and pristine waters.

Lombok is much less developed than neighboring Bali and appeals to travelers truly seeking a quiet island escape. Lombok's airport is called Lombok International Airport, but it's possible to arrive by ferry from Padang Bali.

Senggigi Beach is a 10-kilometer stretch of coastline and the most popular area in Lombok. The infrastructure is basic, keeping things simple and relaxed. Resorts in this area have easy access to the beach and the township. Away from the coastline, Mount Rinjani is an active volcano with a crater lake and even hot springs. The area around Mount Rinjani is national parkland, and trekkers can hike all the way to the rim of the crater.

Trips to islands off the coast of Lombok are popular thanks to secluded beaches, warm water, and good snorkeling and diving. The islands of Gili Trawangan, Pulau Gili Meno, and Gili Air each have their own dive centers.

Surabaya is one of the largest cities in Indonesia and a major business hub. It boasts an efficient mass transportation system, so getting around the city to all its attractions is simple and inexpensive. Hotels near Juanda International Airport are quite popular, given the city's function as a stopover point for Bali and Mount Bromo.

Many of the hotels in Surabaya are located near the House of Sampoerna, a beautifully maintained Dutch colonial compound in the Old Surabaya area. The complex is massive, contains a museum and several cafes, and offers guided tours. The Masjid Al Akbar Surabaya Mosque is thought to be the largest in Southeast Asia and even has an elevator to the top, offering visitors some great views. The Ciputra Waterpark has a wave pool, many slides, and water games and is a great place to beat the intense heat of the city.

Surabaya is also a gateway city for Mount Bromo and the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. This area features some of Indonesia's most active volcanoes which are remarkable in that the mountains are ashy and lifeless while the surrounding area is extremely lush thanks to fertile volcanic soil.

Find the most suitable accommodation for you by clicking on our interactive map and exploring Surabaya for hotels and must-see destinations.

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra, and one of the largest cities in Indonesia. The city is home to many different ethnic groups, making it a perfect place for experiencing the many different cuisines that are readily available. While Medan is not one of Indonesia’s most-famous tourist destinations, it offers a chance to explore the many cultures which call it home.

The city is served by Kuala Namu International Airport, and hotels near the airport are conveniently located within a short distance of the airport and within reach of the rest of the city center.

Malang is considered by many to be the most attractive of Java's big cities. The city itself dates back many centuries and was mentioned in records as far back as the 8th century when it was the seat of government for the ancient Kanjuruhan and Singhasari kingdoms. Today, modern Malang is a busy metropolis that is also an important center of trade and commerce.

The countryside of Malang is very beautiful, and many visitors use the city as a base to explore the region. Travelers will find many lovely beaches, including the trio that make up Balekambang Beach. Heading inland, lush green hills with tea plantations, fruit farms, and small villages can be explored. Although most guests choose a Malang hotel in the heart of town, there is plenty of Malang accommodation in the surrounding areas, particularly along the coast.

Not-to-be-missed attractions while visiting Malang include the Singosari Temple and the nearby bathing pools at Ken Dedes. Within Malang itself, Ijen Street is a great street to explore, with flowering trees and a beautiful backdrop of Dutch colonial buildings. Many of Malang's more charming guesthouses are found in this neighborhood, along with plenty of restaurants, bars, and cafes.
